A perfect introduction to Adobe Illustrator, students will learn the basics of the program through 3 projects: a geometric digital art piece, a logo design and a poster layout. Students will also learn to effectively use typography through the basics of communication design. No prior knowledge of Illustrator is necessary but basic computer skills are required.

Explore the creative use of camera features and digital image editing software to expand your vision, open your mind, and dramatically improve your photography. Learn to use camera settings and accessories such as high ISO, long exposures, filters, and RAW format to transform the subject and support your artistic intent. Explore software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom to edit, enhance, and “unfold” the expressive possibilities of your images.
Class content includes lectures, demonstrations, field work, software instruction and exploration, along with gentle, insightful critiques of your work.
Prerequisite: A basic knowledge of photography, preferably an adjustable camera, and access to either Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. Tripod optional.
Please bring 6-8 images of your work on a thumb drive and your camera to the first class.
David Ulrich is a photography professor at Pacific New Media (UH–Mānoa) and Chaminade University. He is an active photographer and writer whose work has been published in books and journals including Aperture, Parabola, MANOA, and Sierra Club publications. David’s photographs have been exhibited in more than 75 one-person and group exhibitions in museums, galleries, and universities. He is the author of The Widening Stream: the Seven Stages of Creativity and the forthcoming Zen Camera: Six Lessons in Photography to Awaken Creativity and Sight (Ten Speed Press/Random House, early 2018).
